Short Answer: Check the Claims, Then Match the Format
Eco friendly laundry detergent is a broad claim the FTC cautions brands not to make without qualification, so check specific certifications, then match format to soil level. This guide compares 6 options, 60 to 240 loads per pack. ENERGY STAR says about 90% of a washer’s energy heats water, so cold washing matters too.

If you want one name before the explanations, start with Blueland’s Free & Clear tablets. Its listing names more third-party certifications than any other pick here, and it ships without a plastic jug. It still won’t suit every household, and the three myths below explain who should look elsewhere.
Most guides to eco friendly laundry detergent rank brands. This one starts with three myths that lead to bad buys. The first says eco friendly is a verified label, the second says zero waste packaging settles the question, and the third says one format cleans every load the same.
Picks come from Amazon listings I read on October 7, 2026, named sources linked in each section, and my own use where I say so. This isn’t a lab comparison, so I won’t rank cleaning power, and every listing fact is marked as listed. How I choose products is on the what we review page.

- I mostly wash light clothes: Earth Breeze sheets
- I want the most named certifications: Blueland tablets
- I wash towels or heavier loads: ECOS liquid or Dropps pods

Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent: 6 Picks at a Glance
Format and loads come from the listings I read on October 7, 2026. The best-for labels describe listing facts and my own use, not cleaning rankings.
| Pick | Format | Loads (as listed) | Best for | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blueland Free & Clear | Tablets | 60 | Most named certifications | Check Price on Amazon |
| Earth Breeze Fresh Scent | Sheets | 60 | Light loads and travel | Check Price on Amazon |
| Tru Earth Fresh Linen | Sheets | 128 | A larger sheet pack | Check Price on Amazon |
| ECOS Free & Clear | Liquid | 100 (two 50 fl oz bottles) | A liquid with a named seal | Check Price on Amazon |
| Molly’s Suds Original Unscented | Powder | 240 | Most loads per pack | Check Price on Amazon |
| Dropps Free & Clear | Pods | 140 | Pods with a biobased label | Check Price on Amazon |
Listings checked October 7, 2026. All six showed an Add to Cart option and delivery within about a week to a New York ZIP. Blueland, my first pick for named certifications, was in stock and shipping from Amazon.
Myth 1: Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent Is a Verified Label
It isn’t. The FTC’s 2012 Green Guides release cautions brands against broad, unqualified claims like eco-friendly, because the agency’s consumer study found shoppers read them as promising specific, far-reaching environmental benefits. The FTC adds that very few products, if any, have all the attributes people imagine behind that phrase.
The Guides aren’t agency rules or regulations. They describe the claims the FTC may find deceptive, and the 2012 update added sections on certifications and seals, free-of claims and non-toxic claims. A seal that doesn’t say what it certifies can read as a broad claim too.
NBC Select makes the same point from the shopping side. Brands call detergents eco-friendly, green or natural, and no specific criteria sit behind those words. So the front label shows what the brand wants you to believe, and the ingredient list and any named certification show what it can document.
EPA’s Safer Choice program is one place to check. It’s voluntary, it helps shoppers find products that perform and contain safer ingredients, and its product finder has a laundry category, so a safer choice laundry detergent search there beats a slogan. On the listings I read, ECOS and Blueland both state Safer Choice, but I didn’t confirm either in EPA’s finder, so look them up before you rely on the seal.
What the six listings state
Here’s what each of the six Amazon listings states, read on October 7, 2026. A dash means the text I read didn’t say it, which is a prompt to check the pack, not proof the product lacks it.

Run the audit in four steps
- Read the listing bullets for a named certification, such as Safer Choice, USDA BioPreferred or Leaping Bunny. Words like plant-powered don’t count.
- Look the exact product up in the certifier’s directory, for example EPA’s Safer Choice finder.
- Check what the free-of claims leave out. A paraben free laundry detergent claim, like Tru Earth’s paraben-free wording or ECOS’s paraben and phosphate free wording, describes what’s missing, not the formula’s overall footprint.
- Note the dose per load. Blueland lists one tablet per load and two for large loads, and Molly’s Suds lists one tablespoon, so the dose changes how long a pack lasts.
Best Natural Laundry Detergent: Why the Word Proves Little
If you searched for the best natural laundry detergent, the label problem is the same as it is for any eco friendly laundry detergent. The FTC release says the Guides don’t address the terms sustainable, natural or organic, and it points to USDA’s National Organic Program for organic claims on farm-derived products. So natural is a brand’s word, not a defined threshold.
The same goes for searches like best green laundry detergent, best sustainable laundry detergent and earth friendly laundry detergent. Be wary of any page that names the most environmentally friendly laundry detergent, or the most eco friendly laundry detergent, without stating its yardstick. A fair yardstick has three parts: named certifications, packaging, and how far one pack goes.
That’s the yardstick I used for the six picks. For a best natural laundry detergent shortlist in powder form, Molly’s Suds lists four simple ingredients and Leaping Bunny-certified cruelty-free ingredients, and Blueland lists plant and mineral-based cleaning power (both as listed). Neither word proves safety, so read the full ingredient list on the pack.
Myth 2: Zero Waste Laundry Detergent Means Lowest Impact
A zero waste laundry detergent removes the jug, and that part is real. It’s the piece you can see in your recycling bin. But ENERGY STAR says water heating uses about 90% of the energy a clothes washer consumes, so the dial matters more than the box.
ENERGY STAR also says moving from hot to warm can cut a load’s energy use in half, and cold saves more. Cold water generally cleans well unless you’re dealing with oily stains. Washers use about the same energy whatever the load size, so full loads beat half loads.
Eco friendly laundry starts with that dial. Pair any pick here with a cold wash for light loads and warm for oily stains. If a stain has already set, start with our guide to the best stain remover for old set-in stains before you rewash.
Check what dissolves, not just what ships
NBC Select notes that pods usually contain a polyvinyl material, which is a plastic, though some brands use plant-derived ingredients. The same question applies to sheets and strips. Earth Breeze’s listing says microplastic-free, but Tru Earth’s listing doesn’t say what the sheet is made of, and Dropps’ listing says plastic-free packaging, which describes the pack, so check the product page before you assume a plastic-free pack means a film-free dose.
How long one pack lasts
Pack life is easy to overlook. At ENERGY STAR’s average of about 300 loads a year for a US family, a 60-load pack lasts about 2.4 months, so you reorder five times a year. The 240-load Molly’s Suds pack lasts about 9.6 months.

Dose changes this, and how much laundry detergent to use is set by the pack, not by habit. Blueland’s listing says one tablet per load and two for large loads, so doubling up halves the supply. Fewer reorders means fewer boxes on your porch, and that’s the zero waste laundry detergent benefit I can state without guessing at carbon math.
Myth 3: Plastic Free Laundry Detergent Sheets Fit Every Load
Plastic free laundry detergent sheets are the easiest swap. There’s no measuring, no jug, and a pack that slips into a travel bag. Laundry detergent strips and sheets are the same idea under two names, and that convenience is why people stretch them past the loads they suit.
Two limits show up in the sources themselves. Blueland’s listing says to use two tablets for large loads, so even a brand built around one unit per load plans for bigger jobs. And ENERGY STAR names oily stains as the exception to its cold-water advice, so an oily load is where I’d reach for warm water and a stronger formula first.
My rule for any eco friendly laundry detergent is to pick the format by your dirtiest regular load, not your average one. Plastic free laundry detergent sheets suit light clothes and travel. For towels, gym clothes or heavier soil, start with a formula whose listing names enzymes, such as ECOS or Dropps, and treat that as a selection rule, not a cleaning ranking.
If towels already feel stiff or smell flat, residue from earlier washes is often the cause, not the new detergent. Our guide on how to make towels soft again covers the fix, and how to strip laundry covers a full reset. Wool dryer balls can stand in for fabric softener on the towel load.
Eco Friendly Laundry Soap or Detergent: Read the Title
People search for eco friendly laundry soap, but every product in this guide is titled detergent on Amazon: sheets, tablets, liquid, powder and pods. The word you type and the word on the pack don’t have to match. The ingredient list and any named certification do the real work, and the four-step audit above covers both.
If I had to name the closest match to eco friendly laundry soap, I’d point to Molly’s Suds. It’s a powder with a scoop dose and a short ingredient list, and its listing says unscented and free of artificial dyes and fragrances. It’s also the one pick here that fits an eco friendly washing powder search.
One more naming trap is that unscented and fragrance-free aren’t the same. NBC Select, citing an EPA fact sheet, says fragrance-free means no fragrance material or masking scent, while unscented can include chemicals that mask other odors. For a best fragrance free laundry detergent search, look for Free & Clear wording, then check the ingredients.
The 6 Eco Friendly Laundry Detergents Reviewed
I ordered these by how I’d match them to a household, not by cleaning power. Every listing fact is marked as listed and was read on October 7, 2026.
Blueland Free & Clear Tablets: Best for Named Certifications
Blueland’s listing names EPA Safer Choice, Leaping Bunny, USDA BioPreferred, B Corp and Climate Neutral, and adds vegan and septic-safe wording (as listed). The pack is 60 tablets with no plastic jug. That’s the longest certification list of the six, so it’s the pick I’d open first among laundry detergent tablets, eco friendly laundry tablets and any zero waste laundry detergent shortlist.
| Detail | As listed |
|---|---|
| Format | Tablets, dropped into the drum |
| Linked version | 60 count, Free & Clear |
| Loads | 60 (one tablet per load, two for large loads) |
| Named certifications | Safer Choice, Leaping Bunny, USDA BioPreferred, B Corp, Climate Neutral |
| Septic | Septic safe in the listing title |
Who it suits: households that want plastic-free packaging and named seals in one box. Dry tablets can arrive crushed, so open the pack on delivery and search Amazon’s review box for crumble and dissolve before you commit.
Skip it if you want a pack that lasts most of the year: 60 tablets covers about 2.4 months at 300 loads a year (calculated).

Earth Breeze Sheets: Best for Light Loads and Travel
Earth Breeze lists 60 loads of sheets for hot or cold cycles, with no plastic jug, microplastic-free wording, and dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic claims (as listed). The listing names no third-party certification in the text I read, and it says the brand is moving inventory to a Kentucky facility, so what arrives can vary by shipment. As plastic free laundry detergent sheets go, it is the lightest-pack option here.
I’ve used Earth Breeze sheets for one to three years on light everyday loads. They’re fine there, but I’ve found them weaker on towels than other detergents.
| Detail | As listed |
|---|---|
| Format | Sheets |
| Linked version | Fresh Scent, 60 loads (Fragrance Free is a separate scent tile) |
| Wash temperature | Hot or cold cycles |
| Named certifications | None in the text I read |
| Plastic claim | No plastic jug, microplastic-free |
Who it suits: light loads, travel bags and small storage. Sheets that don’t fully dissolve can leave marks, so watch the first few loads.
Skip it if you want a named third-party seal: the listing text I read names none.
Links the Fresh Scent, 60-load pack. Check the scent tile for Fragrance Free before adding to cart.
Tru Earth Sheets: Best for a Larger Sheet Pack
Tru Earth’s listing is titled 128 loads in Fresh Linen and calls the sheets ultra-concentrated, with no plastic jug and vegan-friendly and paraben-free wording (as listed). The title also says packaging may vary, and the text I read names no third-party certification. Among eco friendly laundry strips it’s the larger-pack option, at about 5.1 months of supply (calculated).
| Detail | As listed |
|---|---|
| Format | Sheets |
| Linked version | Fresh Linen, titled 128 loads (32 and 64 count tiles also exist) |
| Packaging | Title says packaging may vary |
| Named certifications | None in the text I read |
| Plastic and free-of claims | No plastic jug, vegan-friendly, paraben-free |
Who it suits: people who want sheets with fewer reorders. Brands can change packs and sourcing over time, so read the pack when it arrives and don’t lean on origin claims you saw elsewhere.
Skip it if you want identical packaging every order: the listing title says packaging may vary.
Links the Fresh Linen listing titled 128 loads. Check the size tile and the scent tile before adding to cart.
ECOS Liquid: Best Liquid With a Named Seal
ECOS lists EPA Safer Choice, vegan and hypoallergenic claims, paraben and phosphate free wording, enzyme-based cleaning and US manufacturing (as listed). The linked pack is two 50 fl oz bottles, listed as 100 loads. It’s the conventional pour-and-measure option here, and it ships in plastic bottles.
| Detail | As listed |
|---|---|
| Format | Liquid |
| Linked version | Free & Clear, 50 fl oz, pack of 2 |
| Loads | 100 |
| Named certifications | EPA Safer Choice |
| Free-of claims | Paraben and phosphate free |
Who it suits: households that prefer pouring a liquid and want a named seal on the listing.
Liquids ship heavy and can leak in transit, so check the bottles when the box arrives.
Skip it if you want a plastic-free pack: this listing is two liquid bottles.
Links Free & Clear, 50 fl oz, pack of 2. Check the scent and size tiles before adding to cart.
Molly’s Suds Powder: Best for Most Loads Per Pack
Molly’s Suds lists 240 loads in two 79 oz bags with a scoop, at one tablespoon per load (as listed). The listing also names four simple ingredients, Leaping Bunny-certified cruelty-free ingredients, and septic and grey water safe wording, and says it works in HE washers. It lists silk and leather as the fabrics to skip.
| Detail | As listed |
|---|---|
| Format | Powder with a scoop |
| Linked version | Original, Unscented, two 79 oz bags |
| Loads | 240 at one tablespoon per load |
| Named certifications | Leaping Bunny (ingredients) |
| Systems | HE washers, septic and grey water |
Who it suits: large households and septic or greywater setups, and anyone shopping for eco friendly laundry soap or a natural laundry detergent powder. Powders trade the no-measure ease of sheets for a scoop.
Skip it if you want a scented wash: this listing is the Unscented version.
Links Original Unscented, two 79 oz bags (240 loads). Check the scent and pack tiles before adding to cart.
Dropps Pods: Best Pods With a Biobased Label
Dropps lists 140 Free & Clear pods with five enzymes, a USDA Certified Biobased formula and 58% of ingredients from renewable resources, plus B Corp, never-tested-on-animals and made-without-parabens wording (as listed). The title says plastic-free packaging, which describes the pack. NBC Select says pods usually contain a polyvinyl film, so check the product page for what the pod itself is made of.
I’ve used Dropps pods daily for about six months, and my laundry has come out clean and odor free.
| Detail | As listed |
|---|---|
| Format | Pods |
| Linked version | Free & Clear, 140 count |
| Enzymes | Five |
| Named certifications | USDA Certified Biobased, B Corp wording |
| Renewable content | 58% of ingredients |
Who it suits: people who want pods and a biobased label. Dropps sells scented versions under the same brand, so confirm you’re on Free & Clear.
Skip it if you need a fully plant-derived formula: the listing says 58% of ingredients are from renewable resources.
Links Free & Clear pods, 140 count. Check the count tile before adding to cart.
Decision Helper: Match the Format to Your Loads
Pick an eco friendly laundry detergent by your dirtiest regular load, then check the edge cases below. Plastic free laundry detergent sheets and tablets suit the lighter end of that range.

Cold water: Earth Breeze’s listing says hot or cold cycles, and ENERGY STAR says cold generally cleans well. If you want the best laundry detergent for cold water, confirm the pack says it works cold, then keep warm for oily stains.
HE and septic: Molly’s Suds lists HE washers and septic and grey water systems, and Blueland’s title says septic safe (as listed). If you’re after the best laundry detergent for septic systems or the best HE laundry detergent, read those two listings first.
Fragrance: Blueland, ECOS and Dropps are linked as Free & Clear and Molly’s as Unscented. Earth Breeze and Tru Earth are linked as scented versions, so switch tiles if you want none.
Which One Should You Choose
The right eco friendly laundry detergent depends on your household, your washer and your dirtiest regular load, so here is how I would split the six.
Pick by household
- Blueland tablets for the most named certifications and a plastic-free pack.
- Earth Breeze sheets for light loads, travel and small storage, which matches my own use.
- Tru Earth sheets if you want sheets and fewer reorders, at about 5.1 months per pack (calculated).
- ECOS liquid for a named seal and a pour-and-measure routine.
- Molly’s Suds powder for large households, septic or greywater systems and the fewest reorders.
- Dropps pods for pods with a biobased label and a clean, odor-free result in my own use.
If you’d rather shop a mainstream shelf brand, our Seventh Generation laundry detergent review covers three formulas. For boosters, see baking soda in laundry and baking soda vs washing soda before you mix anything.
Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent FAQ
What Makes an Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent Different?
No single standard defines it, so look for a named certification, a short ingredient list and a pack that fits how you wash.
- Certification: search the exact product in the certifier’s directory, such as EPA’s Safer Choice finder.
- Packaging: ask what the sheet, film or tablet is made of, not only the box.
- Dose: a lower dose per load stretches the pack and cuts reorders.
Do Laundry Detergent Sheets Work?
For light, everyday loads they can, and I’ve used Earth Breeze sheets that way for one to three years. For towels and heavier soil I’ve found them weaker than other detergents, so match the format to your dirtiest regular load.
- Run light loads cold, per ENERGY STAR, and use warm for oily stains.
- Watch early loads for undissolved bits, and compare your load size to the pack directions.
- Switch to a formula that lists enzymes if towels come out flat.
Are Laundry Detergent Sheets Better for the Environment?
They remove the plastic jug, but ENERGY STAR says about 90% of a washer’s energy goes to heating water, so wash temperature matters more than format.
- Check what the sheet is made of on the product page.
- Wash full loads, since washers use about the same energy at any load size.
- Choose cold for light loads, including with plastic free laundry detergent sheets.
Verdict: The Eco Friendly Laundry Detergent I’d Start With
Start with Blueland if you want the most named certifications and a plastic-free pack. Choose Earth Breeze for light loads and travel, ECOS or Dropps if towels and gym clothes are your dirtiest loads, and Molly’s Suds if you want 240 loads and the fewest reorders. If you started with a best natural laundry detergent or eco friendly laundry soap search, Molly’s Suds and Blueland are the two listings to read first.
Listing checked October 7, 2026. Links the 60-count Free & Clear tablets.
Whatever you buy, treat eco friendly as a question to check. Look up the seal, read what the pod or sheet is made of, run light loads cold, and keep the dose on the pack. Blueland’s pack covers about 2.4 months at 300 loads a year, so plan the reorder before you run out.
