Short Answer: Match the Box to Your Laundry
Tide powder laundry detergent comes in three boxes worth buying. Original fits everyday loads, Ultra OXI fits dingy whites and set-in odors, and Clean and Gentle fits households that want a gentler formula. Tide says Ultra OXI attacks 14-day-old stains, while its Original page says 7-day-old ones, so match the box to your soil.

If most of your laundry is everyday mixed loads, start with Tide Original Powder in the 143 oz box. That listing shows 125 loads, and I checked it on October 29, 2026. Amazon showed it shipped and sold by Amazon.com that day.
Tide laundry detergent powder looks like one product on a shelf, but the boxes differ in formula, load math and scent. Tide’s own pages even disagree on where powder goes in a front-loader. I sorted those differences out below, along with the Tide powder vs liquid question.
Picks here come from Amazon listings and Tide’s product pages I read on October 29, 2026, named sources, and my own use where I say so. I left out Plus Bleach and Mountain Spring, and the section on other Tide powders explains why.
I wash in a front-load HE washer, mostly everyday mixed loads and work clothes or whites, so the front-loader sections get the most space. If you’re also fighting stiff towels or a musty washer, the guides on how to make towels soft again and front load washer mold pair well with this one.

Tide Powder Laundry Detergent at a Glance: 3 Picks
Here are the three Tide laundry detergent powder boxes side by side, with the exact sizes I link and the load counts Amazon prints in each title. Roles come from Tide’s product pages, listing facts and my own use of Original and Ultra OXI.
| Pick | Best for | Box linked | Tide’s own claim | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tide Original Powder | Best for everyday loads | 143 oz box, listed at 125 loads | Targets 7-day-old stains (Tide’s Original page) | Check Price |
| Tide Ultra OXI Powder | Best for dingy whites and odors | 114 oz box, listed at 73 loads | Built-in pre-treater, targets 14-day-old stains (Tide’s Ultra OXI page) | Check Price |
| Tide Clean and Gentle Powder | Best for gentle-on-skin households | 77 oz box, listed at 68 loads | NEA- and NPF-certified hypoallergenic formula, dermatologist tested (Tide’s page) | Check Price |
Listing checked October 29, 2026. Load counts come from the listing titles, and each Check Price link goes to the size named in the table.
Tide Powder vs Liquid: When Powder Is the Better Call
Tide powder vs liquid isn’t a quality contest. Tide’s how-to page for powder says powder suits dirt and clay and liquid suits greasy stains like makeup and oil, which you can pre-treat directly with the liquid.
House Digest’s June 2026 summary of Consumer Reports’ powder results draws the same split in its intro. It says liquids usually pre-treat better, avoid clumping in cold water and fight grease harder, while powders handle outdoor stains.
That summary also says Tide Original powder was strong on body oils and good on grass, dirt and blood, but weaker on coffee, chocolate and salad dressing. Food stains are where a pre-treat step matters most, and my guide to removing set-in stains covers the sprays and pastes for it.
| Soil type | What Tide or House Digest says | Better starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Dirt, clay, mud | Tide says powder is better | Powder |
| Makeup, oil, grease | Tide says liquid, pre-treated directly | Liquid pre-treat, then wash |
| Coffee, chocolate, dressing | House Digest reports Original powder was weaker | Pre-treat first, then wash |
| Cold-water cycles | House Digest says liquid won’t clump | Liquid, or the powder Tide says dissolves in cold water |
My rule of thumb from Tide’s own split is powder for dirt and sweat, liquid pre-treat for grease. A mixed hamper can use either, so the Tide powder vs liquid choice usually comes down to the one stain type you fight most.
Tide HE Powder Laundry Detergent: Where It Goes in Your Washer
Tide HE powder laundry detergent is how Tide’s Original powder page describes the Original box, and the page says it works in HE and non-HE washers. Tide’s how-to page goes further and says all of its detergents are now HE-compatible.
Placement is where Tide contradicts itself. The how-to page says top loaders take powder directly in the drum and front loaders take it in the detergent drawer, while the Clean and Gentle page says to toss it in the drum of a regular or HE machine.
The Original and Ultra OXI pages say only to start the washer, add the detergent, then add the clothes. Only the how-to page mentions the drawer, and the product pages don’t back it up.
My rule is to follow your washer’s manual first, since the manufacturer wrote it for your machine. I wash in a front-load HE washer, so this conflict applies to me too, and I’m not going to pretend a Tide page settles it.
There’s a second reason placement matters. Tide says powder may not always dissolve completely, and undissolved powder is what I’d expect to collect in a front-loader’s drawer and gasket. That’s my reasoning, not a Tide claim, and the front load washer mold guide shows how to check the gasket while the Tide washing machine cleaner vs Affresh comparison covers monthly cleaning.
Loads Per Box: The Ounce Math Behind Tide Powder Laundry Detergent
Ounces on the box don’t tell you loads, and the Tide powder laundry detergent boxes prove it. I divided the ounces in each Amazon title by the load count in the same title.
Original works out to about 1.14 oz per listed load in the 143 oz box, 1.14 in the 108 oz box and 1.13 in the 85 oz box. Clean and Gentle works out to about 1.13. Ultra OXI works out to about 1.56, because its 114 oz box lists 73 loads.

That makes a 114 oz Ultra OXI box list fewer loads than a 108 oz Original box, which lists 95. Compare loads, not ounces, before you pick a size.
I can’t tell why Ultra OXI’s count is lower. Tide’s pages show the same scoop bars for all three powders, and the bullets I read on the three listings don’t say which bar the load count assumes. Treat the load counts as listing claims, not measured doses.
Scoop Bars: How Much Tide Powder to Use
Tide powder laundry detergent dosage text is identical on the Original, Ultra OXI and Clean and Gentle pages. Fill the scoop to bar 1 for medium loads, bar 3 for large loads and bar 5 for HE full loads.

The text then gives one order of operations: start the washer, add the detergent, then add the clothes. My read is that this puts the powder in contact with water first, which is the logical way to help it dissolve.
Two gaps show up on the pages. The dosage sections name the bars but give no ounce or gram value for each one, and the how-to page tells you to check the dosage amount and your fabric care labels before you wash.
That means I can’t tell you how many loads a box really gives at bar 5. If a listing’s load count assumes a lower bar, bar 5 loads will empty the box sooner, and the listings I read don’t say which bar they assume.
Tide Ultra OXI Powder: What the Extra Oxi Changes
Tide Ultra OXI Powder is the box Tide positions above Original. Its page lists a built-in pre-treater, surfactants and enzymes, says the combination attacks 14-day-old stains in one step, and claims better cleaning than Tide Original.
Tide’s FAQ on that page says it’s safe for all washable fabrics and for HE machines. Tide also says it targets set-in odors, and the guide on why towels smell after washing covers the washer-side causes that detergent alone won’t fix.
Outside testing points the same direction. House Digest’s summary of the 2026 Consumer Reports results says Ultra OXI was judged more effective overall than Original and did well on every stain in the test. I haven’t read Consumer Reports’ own page because it sits behind a membership wall, so treat that as a secondhand report.
One naming snag. Amazon titles the box Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder, Tide’s page says Tide Ultra OXI Powder, and Amazon’s bullet gives 7 days for old stains where Tide’s page gives 14. I quote Tide’s page for that reason.
If you’re choosing between sizes, remember the ounce math above. The 114 oz Tide Ultra OXI Powder box lists 73 loads, so it isn’t the most loads per ounce in the lineup.
The 3 Best Tide Powder Boxes, Reviewed
Each pick links one exact size, so check the size tile before you add anything to your cart.
Tide Original Powder, 143 oz: Best for Everyday Loads
Tide Original Powder is the baseline of the lineup. Tide’s page describes this Tide HE powder laundry detergent for regular and HE machines with a 7-day-old stain claim, and Amazon’s title for the linked box reads Tide Powder Laundry Detergent, Original Scent, 125 Loads, 143 oz.
The bullets I read on the listing, as listed, call out color-safe cleaning, HE use and Clean Dissolve technology.
I’ve used Tide Original and Ultra OXI powder for six to twelve months in a front-load HE washer, on everyday mixed loads and work clothes or whites. Original is the one I’d call the best choice for normal daily laundry.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Box linked | 143 oz, Original Scent |
| Listed loads | 125 (from the Amazon title) |
| Ounces per listed load | About 1.14 (calculated) |
| HE use | Listed as HE safe |
| Scoop bars | 1 medium, 3 large, 5 HE full (Tide’s page) |
| Other sizes on the listing | 85 oz, 108 oz, 143 oz 2-pack, 232 oz |
It suits households with mixed everyday loads in either a top-loader or a front-loader.
Skip it if you want a built-in pre-treater, because Tide lists that feature on Ultra OXI and not on this box.
Links the 143 oz box listed at 125 loads. Check the size tile before adding to cart, since the same listing also offers 85 oz, 108 oz, a 143 oz 2-pack and 232 oz. Search Amazon’s review box for “dissolve” and “box” to see whether those matter to you.
Tide Ultra OXI Powder, 114 oz: Best for Dingy Whites
Tide Ultra OXI Powder is the pick when whites look dull or clothes hold set-in odors. Amazon’s title for the linked box reads Tide Plus Ultra Oxi Powder Laundry Detergent, 73 Loads, 114 oz, and Tide’s page lists the pre-treater, enzymes and the 14-day-old stain claim.
In my front-load HE washer, Ultra OXI is the powder that brings dingy whites back. I’ve used it for six to twelve months on work clothes and whites, and I’m not claiming results beyond that.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Box linked | 114 oz, listed as Tide Plus Ultra Oxi |
| Listed loads | 73 (from the Amazon title) |
| Ounces per listed load | About 1.56 (calculated) |
| Built-in pre-treater | Yes, per Tide’s page |
| Scoop bars | 1 medium, 3 large, 5 HE full (Tide’s page) |
| Other sizes on the listing | 127 oz and 250 oz tiles |
It suits households with white work clothes, sheets or towels that need a brightening boost.
Skip it if you want the most loads per ounce, because this box works out to about 1.56 oz per listed load against about 1.14 for the 143 oz Original (calculated).
Links the 114 oz box listed at 73 loads. Check the size tile before adding to cart, since the same listing shows other sizes, including 250 oz.
Tide Clean and Gentle Powder, 77 oz: Best Gentle-on-Skin Option
Tide Clean and Gentle Powder is Tide’s gentler powder. Its page describes an NEA- and NPF-certified hypoallergenic formula that is dermatologist tested, dissolves in cold water and suits regular and HE machines.
This verdict rests on Tide’s page and the Amazon listing, not on my own use. Amazon’s title for the linked box calls it Unscented, but Tide’s page never uses that word, so read the SmartLabel ingredient list on Tide’s page if fragrance matters to you.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Box linked | 77 oz, Clean and Gentle |
| Listed loads | 68 (from the Amazon title) |
| Ounces per listed load | About 1.13 (calculated) |
| Cold water | Dissolves in cold water, per Tide’s page |
| Brighteners | Present, per Tide’s reply on its page |
| Scoop bars | 1 medium, 3 large, 5 HE full (Tide’s page) |
It suits households that want Tide’s gentler formula and accept brighteners in it.
Skip it if you need a fragrance-free powder, because Tide’s page doesn’t say the formula is fragrance-free and Tide’s reply on that page says it contains brighteners.
Links the 77 oz box listed at 68 loads. Search Amazon’s review box for “scent” before you buy if fragrance matters to you.
Tide Laundry Detergent Powder Compared: Original vs Ultra OXI vs Clean and Gentle
This matrix uses Tide’s own wording from the pages I read on October 29, 2026, so a blank or “not stated” cell means the page didn’t say, not that the feature is missing.
| Feature | Original | Ultra OXI | Clean and Gentle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Role in this guide | Everyday loads | Dingy whites and odors | Gentle-on-skin households |
| Tide’s stain claim | Targets 7-day-old stains | Targets 14-day-old stains | Removes stains and odors without pre-treating |
| Built-in pre-treater | Not listed on the page | Yes, per Tide | Not listed on the page |
| Skin positioning | Not stated | Not stated | NEA- and NPF-certified hypoallergenic formula, per Tide |
| Cold water | Not stated on the page | Tide’s reply mentions cold water | Dissolves in cold water, per the page |
| HE machines | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Scoop bars | 1, 3 and 5 | 1, 3 and 5 | 1, 3 and 5 |
| Amazon title, size and loads | 143 oz, 125 loads | 114 oz, 73 loads | 77 oz, 68 loads |
| Ounces per listed load | About 1.14 | About 1.56 | About 1.13 |
| Buy | Check Price | Check Price | Check Price |
Tide laundry detergent powder differs less than the box art suggests. The real splits are the pre-treater, the skin positioning and the load math, so decide on those three and ignore the rest.
Other Tide Powders You’ll See: Mountain Spring, Plus Bleach and Downy
Mountain Spring is gone. Tide’s reply on its Original page, dated June 4, 2026, says the scent is discontinued, and Amazon’s Mountain Spring 143 oz listing showed only “See All Buying Options” with no Buy Box on October 29. If you searched for tide mountain spring powder, Original Scent is the box I linked.
Plus Bleach exists in the Tide powder laundry detergent family. Tide’s how-to page recommends its bleach powder for brilliant whites, but the Plus Bleach listings I checked on October 29 were sold by third parties with no sales volume shown, so I didn’t link one. Ultra OXI is the whites pick I stand behind here.
There’s no Downy powder on the Tide pages I read. They list Original, Ultra OXI, Clean and Gentle and a Plus Bleach version, so a box labeled Tide with Downy powder isn’t something I can vouch for.
Free & Gentle powder is the older name some shoppers still search. Tide’s reply on the Clean and Gentle page acknowledges a formulation change from that older powder, which is why I treat Clean and Gentle as a different box. If fragrance-free is non-negotiable, the Seventh Generation Free & Clear option is a better starting point, and the eco friendly laundry detergent guide compares picks built around that filter.
Essential Tips for Using Tide Powder Laundry Detergent
Most tips for Tide laundry detergent powder come straight from Tide’s pages, and I flag the ones that are my own reasoning.
- Start the washer first, add the powder, then add the clothes, which is the order Tide’s dosage text gives.
- Measure with the scoop and pick the bar by load size: 1 for medium, 3 for large, 5 for HE full loads.
- Check fabric labels and test a hidden spot on anything that might bleed color, as Tide’s how-to page advises.
- Pre-treat grease with liquid detergent, because Tide says liquid handles makeup and oil better than powder does.
- Keep the box closed after each use and out of children’s reach, per the safety text on Tide’s product pages.
- Watch for residue on dark clothes. That means undissolved powder, so in my reasoning the fix is the lowest bar your load size allows and a look at your washer manual.
If towels turn stiff after a switch, the laundry stripping guide and the soft towels guide cover the reset. If you’d rather experiment with boosters, read baking soda vs washing soda first, since the Tide pages I read say nothing about add-ins.
Decision Helper: Match the Tide Powder to Your Laundry

Which One Should You Choose?
- Choose Original if your hamper is mostly everyday mixed loads and you want the baseline box, such as the 143 oz Tide Original Powder.
- Choose Ultra OXI if whites look dull or clothes hold set-in odors, and you accept fewer listed loads per ounce.
- Choose Clean and Gentle if your household wants Tide’s gentler formula and you’ve read the ingredient list for fragrance.
- Skip all three if your biggest problem is greasy kitchen towels or makeup stains, because Tide itself points those to liquid.
- Match the washer to the placement rule in your manual before you copy any drawer or drum advice, mine included.
Tide Powder Laundry Detergent FAQ
Can you use Tide powder detergent in a front-load washer?
Yes. Tide HE powder laundry detergent and Tide’s other powders are described as suitable for regular and HE machines, and its how-to page says all of its detergents are now HE-compatible. Tide’s how-to page puts powder in the detergent drawer for front loaders, while the Clean and Gentle page says to toss it in the drum, so follow your washer’s manual.
- Top loader: powder goes directly in the drum, per Tide’s how-to page.
- Front loader: powder goes in the detergent drawer, per the same page.
- Clean and Gentle page: toss it in the drum of a regular or HE machine.
How much Tide powder should you use per load?
Fill the scoop to bar 1 for medium loads, bar 3 for large loads and bar 5 for HE full loads, according to the dosage sections on Tide’s Original, Ultra OXI and Clean and Gentle pages. Start the washer, add the powder, then add the clothes.
- Bar 1 is for medium loads.
- Bar 3 is for large loads.
- Bar 5 is for HE full loads, and Tide’s pages give no ounce value for any bar.
Does Tide powder dissolve in cold water?
Tide’s Clean and Gentle page says the powder dissolves in cold water, and its Clean Dissolve technology is meant to leave less residue. Tide’s how-to page also says powder may not always dissolve completely, so check dark clothes for residue.
- Clean and Gentle page: dissolves in cold water, per Tide.
- How-to page: powder may not always dissolve completely.
- My reasoning: adding powder as the washer starts gives it the most time in water.
These three questions follow the FAQ patterns on Tide’s own product pages and retailer question boards, not a live search-results pull.
Verdict: Which Tide Powder Laundry Detergent to Buy
Buy Tide Original Powder if you want one box for everyday loads. Tide’s page calls it Tide HE powder laundry detergent, it works out to about 1.14 oz per listed load, and it’s the powder I’d call best for normal daily laundry.
Buy Tide Ultra OXI Powder instead if whites look dingy or odors hang on. Pick Tide Clean and Gentle Powder only after you’ve read its ingredient list, since Tide’s page doesn’t call it fragrance-free.
The top pick links the 143 oz Original box listed at 125 loads, which works out to about 1.14 oz per load against 1.56 for the 114 oz Ultra OXI box. Check the size tile before adding to cart. If grease is your main stain, the Tide powder vs liquid split points you to liquid instead.
